There are suspicions, but any time any doubt is brought up, Deedee changes doctors or locations. Huluĭuring this show, we watch Gypsy go through all this abuse, and no one knows the truth. There were some that she knew were fabricated, and some that she believed to be real. She was a very sheltered woman at that point and didn’t even know what her own medical conditions were. Nicholas Godejohn met her online and they fell in what Gypsy believed to be love. One thing is certain, Gypsy Rose was abused and there’s no way around that. This part of the story was also shown in The Act but on a different level. The true story was a nationwide phenomenon about an abused woman who didn’t even know her own age when the authorities found her. This show flashes back and forth between the present, where Mel and Lacey are talking to the police, and what happened in the past to drive Gypsy to allow this to happen. Lacey (the daughter of the neighbor, and also one of Gypsy’s only friends) talk to the police and tells them that Gypsy may have a boyfriend. We’re flashing between scenes, the neighbors have called the police, they’re going into the house and find the deceased Deedee Blanchard. We aren’t at that point in the show yet, though. She met a man online by the name of Nicholas Godejohn, and they put an end to Deedee’s abusive, evil ways. Gypsy Rose went through a very unbelievable, abusive life, and eventually, she had enough. These parts of the story are pretty spot on. Over time, it becomes clear that Deedee is suffering from Munchausen Syndrome and that poor Gypsy is the victim. Gypsy is in a wheelchair and has countless medical issues–but we aren’t sure of what they actually are. The series begins with Gypsy Rose and Deedee moving into a house built by Habitat for Humanity in Joplin, Missouri. We’re currently four episodes in, and the show is quite addicting. Each episode states that while it’s based on real people and a true story, details are exaggerated and may not be exactly as they actually happened.

This series serves to tell the real-life story and tragic tale of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother Deedee Blanchard’s brutal murder. In March 2019, Hulu premiered one of their newest shows, The Act.
